Tour tough guy sounds off on winning chess ("Use your knights") and eating bear ("Don't")
By CHRIS RODELL
Take More Clubs
"Most amateurs underclub approach shots from the fairway--they assume they'll make perfect contact. Put your ego aside and take some extra stick!"

Take Less Club
"From the rough, amateurs take too much club and try to overpower the grass. The rough will win that battle. Take a higher-lofted club to advance the ball safely."

Pitching Off Tight Lies
"Use a gap wedge, not a sand wedge. The gap's sole has less bounce, so you'll burn the grass instead of digging into it."

Slump-Busting
"A bigger target will help you relax. Be satisfied with hitting the fairway and the green, not spots on them. Pretty soon you'll be dropping shots into a thimble."

Knee-Knockers "Find the speed you like to hit short putts and let the speed dictate the line."

Name Recognition
"I have four names to remember every pro-am, and that's important. One guy always has an unusual name, like Jed--that's easy. Then I remember the name of the guy who was introduced before and after Jed. I'll remind myself, 'Dave was introduced after Jed.' The fourth guy, I just hope someone says his name during the round."

How To Dress For a Bear Hunt
"Don't get stingy with the long underwear. Buy the best you can find. Wear at least two layers of waterproof clothing, and pack a good bug repellent. I love Deep Woods Off! spray. It'll keep the bugs off in a Georgia swamp, and that's spectacular."

Eat Bear Meat?
"It depends on the season and what the bear has been eating, but it's not good food. Don't eat it. Brown bear is so rank that the Eskimos use it for dog food."

Chess Wisdom
"Winning at chess is like beating someone up without having to go to all that trouble. Learn to use your knights--they're great offensive weapons. Against a better player, try to take out his queen early.

"There's a line from Searching for Bobby Fischer: 'Don't move until you see it.' That applies to golf too. Visualize the shot. Don't swing until you can see it."
