September 16, 2005 Michael Campbell - U.S. Open

"What a week! At last - a Major in the bag! It's been a long time in the making, but I've finally achieved a goal I set myself many years ago. It's such a fantastic feeling to make a breakthrough in the US - and at the US Open, no less!"

Darren Clarke withdraws from U.S. Open

"I have withdrawn from next week’s US Open while Heather continues her battle against cancer.

It is far more important for me to be with Heather and our two sons Tyrone and Conor than it is for me to be at Pinehurst.

Hopefully Heather will be out of hospital soon and I will be able to return to the game, but there are more important issues to be dealt with at the moment than swinging a golf club. "

Ernie Els

Ernie Els on his new equipment

"At Wentworth [site of last week's BMW PGA Championship], I had a brand new set of irons in my bag. They’re the same model as before, Titleist forged 670 blades, but these have a Project Rifle shaft which is a bit lighter and slightly softer, around a 6.5 flex. Despite me not having a great week, the clubs will stay in my bag. They feel nice. There’s just a little more ‘give’ in the shaft, which helps me swing the club easier and with good rhythm.

"I’m going from one great tournament to another this week, to the Memorial at Muirfield Village which along with the PGA Championship is one of my favourite weeks of the year. I’m really looking forward to going back and defending the title I won in style last year – shooting a pair of 66s at the weekend – and obviously very focused on putting in a much better performance than I did on my home track last week. As I said before, I’m close to playing well. I just need to get a bit of consistency back in my game and cut out some of the mistakes.

"I played really well here last year and led from start to finish. And crucially, I made some putts. You might remember from the coverage 12 months ago that I had a total of only 100 putts in four rounds, which was a record for this tournament. That’s going to be the real key again for me this week. The putting surfaces are always very true. I just need to make a few early on, to get my confidence up."

Mike Weir's caddy on two Memorial tournaments:

Brennan Little: "I'd like to start off my caddy report this week by congratulating the newly crowned Memorial Cup champions, the London Knights! Growing up in the St. Thomas area, it was great to be home last week and catch some hockey games, as well as spend some quality time with my family.

"Now it is time to get back to business, and Mike is playing the next three weeks in a row. This week happens to be one of my favorite events all year, The Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio hosted by Jack Nicklaus. Muirfield Golf Course is one of the best-conditioned golf courses in the world. It is hard to find a blade of grass out of place on the entire property, and the greens are maybe the best we play all year.

"The most significant change at Muirfield is the removal of about 1000 trees from all over the course. Most of the trees don't affect the way the course plays, but they do affect the way the course looks and the amount of sun the course gets. It looks much more open now and should allow the wind to be more of a factor. I am not sure if the trees were removed due to the fungus that has affected a lot of trees up North this year or it was just to open the course up and allow it to receive more sun. Whatever the reason the change has really benefited the condition of the course."

Tiger on "The Streak"

"To me, the cut streak isn’t better than winning a major championship, but it’s a great feeling to know I accomplished it. It shows determination and pride to always put yourself on the line and give everything you’ve got.

"In my mind, I’ve missed only two cuts in my pro career, the other coming at the 1997 Bell Canadian Open. In both cases, I bogeyed the last hole, which is interesting.

"I don’t care what the PGA Tour thinks, I didn’t miss the cut at the 1998 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am; I withdrew. So the streak actually began at the Disney World/Oldsmobile Classic in 1997. That’s just how I feel."
