How good is your memory?
After a round of golf, can you remember every shot—both good and bad? Pros can. Sometimes decades after a competitive round, they can describe their shots in exquisite detail.
What gives them this "super memory?" In short, they've developed their sensory recall and practiced it intensely, so that when faced with a similar situation, all they have to do is bring up that "mental video" and execute the shot again.
Now you too can "go mental" and improve your game.
Your subconscious mind is the best place to begin improving your golf game, because when your imagination comes alive you will be able to re-create your great shots and execute them perfectly time after time.
Here's how to strengthen your sensory recall and bring it to the golf course like the pros do:
Note: Do not perform these exercises while operating a motor vehicle.
First, get comfortable in your favorite chair, take a long deep breath, close your eyes and imagine yourself walking down a flight of 10 steps. Take your time. As you descend the steps, imagine yourself walking through a foggy mist. You and the steps seem to disappear in the fog. Once you get down to the tenth step, you emerge from the mist—right onto a golf course.
The day is perfect without a cloud in the sky. There's a blazing yellow sun that warms your arms and hands. The air is crisp. Now feel your hands grip your club—firmly yet gently. With your body calm, knees bent and butt out, sense your position in direct alignment with your target. Take a deep breath and exhale slowly. See yourself swing. Feel your hands, arms and hips rotate smoothly. Nice easy rhythm. Pause. Swing. Accelerate through the shot. Hear the whish of that acceleration as your club face strikes the ball. Click! Feel your perfect follow through. Then see your ball take off and soar in the air. See the whiteness of the ball silhouetted against the brilliant blue sky.
Experience the pleasure of this and other great shots as well. All these impressions and "pictures" are available to you because you're in a state of hypnosis. They'll just pop up in your mental video.
Do this exercise for 10 minutes three times a day, once before going to sleep, once before getting out of bed in the morning and once during the day. If your real swing is inconsistent, groove it mentally. This will help your muscles re-create it. Then when you're actually playing, you'll find yourself executing those good shots again and again.
Tell yourself over and over again how easy this game is, how confident you are.
Soon it will be reality video.
