Although Davis Love, III has been dealing with the pressures of competition for many years, when he was heckled during the 2004 Accenture Match Play Championship final, it took him four holes to regain his focus.
This was a rare glimpse into concentration breakdown at the highest level. Amateur golfers are generally more susceptible to breaks in concentration, which can be brought on by something as simple as another golfer sneezing.
Heckled again on the fifth tee, Davis stepped back from addressing the ball and told the marshals "We're not leaving until he's out of here!" Once the marshals ejected the heckler, Davis appears to have blocked out the emotion caused by the interruption, and made his iron shot to the green.
While the TV commentators thought Davis' behavior showed amazing self-control, I believe it was an example of a recovered pre-shot routine.
A pre-shot routine is not just about aim. It's about intention, focus, concentration and total dedication to being in the moment.
Want to get there? The good news is that a simple addition to what you already do during your pre-shot routine can help you achieve it.
The pre-shot bubble
Your subconscious mind and body can be trained to respond as you desire, but only through repetition. Here's how to practice, whenever you get a chance:
Take a deep breath, hold it for a few seconds until you need to breathe again, and think the words "peace, harmony, relax, relax" as you slowly exhale. At first glance this chant or mantra may not sound very powerful, but the power lies in the simplicity.
Step inside your pre-shot bubble

When you purposely take a deep breath and hold it in, you are interfering with your natural breathing rhythm. Doing so eliminates mind chatter and extraneous thoughts, and causes your brain's attention to refocus on the task at hand. To paraphrase Bobby Jones: "the less thinking interferes, the more likely your ball will go towards its target."
Practice this exercise ten times a day, off the course, repeating the words "peace, harmony, relax, relax." Say it before every drive, every iron shot and every putt. This mantra will becomes an automatic relaxing command to your subconscious, and in a relatively short time you will be ready to take it to the golf course.
Once inside your own pre-shot bubble—impervious to sneezers and hecklers— you will soon be scoring your very best.
