I'm a junior golfer and I would like to know if I should start lifting weights?

Question:

I'm a junior golfer and I would like to know if I should start lifting weights? I've read a lot about how Tiger Woods' and David Duval's weight-training programs improved their games. I'm 15 years old and play to a 12 handicap. I'm on the skinny side and kind of weak. I would really appreciate your opinion.

Thanks,
Frank

Answer:

Frank,
You are at a very good age to ease yourself into a conditioning program geared to your golf game.

Although you didn't mention whether or not you're still growing, you did say that you are thin and this is a good enough reason to start a fitness program now.

I strongly recommend pursuing a fitness professional in your area who understands the mechanics of the golf swing. Just doing any fitness program will not necessarily help you. You've got to make sure that it benefits, and doesn't hinder, your swing.

You are probably very flexible, but lack the strength to control your club -- for example, setting the club at the top of your swing consistently. Throughout a round of golf this takes a lot of strength in the shoulders. Once you start fatiguing your swing mechanics will falter and your distance will decrease.

The areas you should focus on strengthening are the abdominals, hamstrings, quadriceps and shoulders. There are other muscle groups that are equally important, but the above should be the primary focus at your stage of physical development.

You are on the right track, just be smart in your decision of which program you begin and make sure your parents are involved in this process and oversee your program. If done correctly, you should see a rapid increase in your driving distance, accuracy and overall scores.

Sincerely,
Mike Pedersen
