I'm a 51-year-old golfer who needs to lose some weight.
Question:
I'm a 51-year-old golfer who needs to lose some weight. Don't we all? With the New Year upon us, I really want to do it this time, but don't know how to begin. I have gone on ALL the diets available, only to gain back the weight I lost. Very frustrating. I'm willing to do what it takes. I want to feel better and also play better for the long-term.
Please help.

Answer:
For starters, every year many people make New Year's resolutions to lose weight and few, if any, follow through with their plans. I have seen it happen over and over again. Making the resolution is not altogether a bad thing, but it's only half the battle. You must stick to your plan and see it through in order to reach your goal. If you are looking for a "quick fix," don't waste your time -- there's no such thing.
Second, it sounds as if you are really committed to making a genuine effort to change your lifestyle. Congratulations -- this is a very important step and will be critical to your success. This is what I like to refer to as the mental side of weight loss. Try to become aware of when you start slipping back into not exercising or poor eating habits. Once you know what causes it, and when it happens, you can better prepare yourself to get through those tough times.
There are hundreds of philosophies on weight loss, but to truly lose the weight and start feeling better you need a "complete" approach. There are three components to a successful (long-term) weight loss program:
- Adequate cardio sessions every week to burn stored fat;
- Strength training to boost your metabolism and burn more calories;
- A proper, lifelong nutritional plan that is realistic.
Since I do not know your personal history, it would be very hard to tell you exactly what to do. But by realizing the components above and doing a little homework, you'll be on your way. I would also suggest pursuing a certified fitness professional to get you started. Good luck, stick to it and the sky is the limit!
