Question: Why is it that every time I practice putting my lower back hurts? It's getting pretty frustrating - since I know that when it hurts I'm not using proper mechanics.
Answer: This is very common complaint among players who are prone to tight hamstrings and a weak lower back. This combination will ultimately lead to fatigue and soreness when putting.
If you look at the position you need to be in to putt properly, you will notice a slight bend at the knees and a more pronounced bend at the hips.
When your hamstrings are tight, you won't be able to hold the correct putting position for long without the tension in your hamstrings forcing you to compromise your putting posture.
The solution is to stretch your hamstrings on a regular basis, and the most effective method is to perform gentle toe touches, pausing at the bottom of the stretch. Do this 2-3 times daily.
Also, I would suggest doing some lower back strengthening exercises to compliment the hamstring stretches. A simple but effective example is the Lying Superman.
To perform this exercise correctly, lie face down with your arms extended out in front of you, like Superman. Simultaneously raise both your upper body and lower body and hold for 10 seconds. Do this 2-3 times a day, and in a short time you will see an improvement in your lower back strength.
issue.
