Annika Sorenstam to be honored at writers awards dinner
February 26, 2004 ELMSFORD, NY (GOLFONLINE) - GOLF MAGAZINE Contributing Player Annika Sorenstam will be recognized by the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association (MGWA) at their 53rd National Awards Dinner on June 14 at the Hilton Rye Town in Rye Brook, New York.

According to an announcement released by the MGWA, Sorenstam, voted by the Associated Press as the 2003 Female Athlete of the Year, will receive the Gold Tee Award, the MGWA’s highest honor. Sorenstam won six LPGA tournament titles last year, including two majors, and was the 100th person inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. Sorenstam also earned LPGA Player of the Year and money titles for the sixth time in her career, and became only the sixth female golfer to complete the career Grand Slam.

Her year also included an historic appearance in the PGA Tour's Bank of America tournament, which, according to the MGWA release, "riveted a worldwide audience and produced unprecedented interest in women’s golf."

Past receipients of the Gold Tee Award include Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Patty Berg, Nancy Lopez, Gerald R. Ford, Bob Hope, Ben Crenshaw, Byron Nelson and Sam Snead.

Other award recipients who will be honored at the dinner are Billy Andrade and Brad Faxon, John D. Laupheimer, Charlotta Sorenstam, the Powell Family, Bob Sommers, and Seawane Golf Club.

According to the MGWA, its National Awards Dinner is the largest, and longest running, golf dinner held annually in the United States. Proceeds from the dinner are distributed to Metropolitan New York caddie scholarship programs and the MGA Foundation.
