Five more majorless players who managed to fumble away the U.S. Open in the final round
By CHRIS RODELL
Jack Hobens, 1907 (Philadelphia Cricket Club)

Up by a stroke after the third round, Hobens inexplicably began to hack the ball all over the place. He eventually limped in with an 85 to finish seven strokes behind Donald Ross' brother, Alex.

Mike Brady, 1912 (CC of Buffalo); 1919 (Brae Burn CC)

Brady had a three-stroke lead going into the final round in 1912, then shot 79 and finished five strokes behind John McDermott. Seven years later, he led by five but shot 80 to fall into a tie with Walter Hogen. Brady lost the playoff.

Herman Barron, 1946 (Canterbury GC)

Barron only needed to par the final two holes to win. But instead, he decided to three-putt 17 for double bogey, then miss an eight-foot par putt on 18 to finish one stroke out of a playoff with Vic Ghezzi, Byron Nelson and eventual winner Lloyd Mangrum.

Colin Montgomerie, 1994 (Oakmont CC), 1997 (Congressional CC)

A birdie on the 9th hole in 1994 gave him a one-stroke lead, but he made four bogeys over the next six holes and lost in a playoff. In 1997 he faced a five-footer on the 17th to take the lead. He waited five minutes to putt--until play had finished on the 18th green, a hundred yards away. he missewd and finished one back of winner Ernie Els.
