Dear Joe,
I'm part of a group of Vietnam veterans having a summer reunion in Las Vegas. None of us have played golf there. Any thoughts on where to play?
Jim Welsh, Laurel, Md.

It would take a SWAT team to flush out a bargain course in Lost Wages, even in the triple-digit heat of summer. Go to Angel Park (702-254-4653, angelpark.com) -- the summer rates for the two Arnold Palmer courses are $55-$90. There's also a par-3 course lit for night play that can be walked for $25. The guys who don't play can try the fun putting course ($9) that's also lit for night play.

Dear Joe,
I'm going to Kauai, Hawaii, for a week with my husband. We heard that AOL founder Steve Case owns a course there, near where the movie Jurassic Park was filmed. That seems like a must-see. What else do you recommend?
Ann Ford, Warren, Ohio

Case's course is Puakea, in Lihue. Its tropical jungle setting was used in Jurassic Park, but until 2003 Puakea itself was a dinosaur -- it had only 10 holes until architect Robin Nelson added eight more ($55-$125; 808- 245-8756, puakeagolf.com). Other options are the Prince Course at Princeville ($125-$195; 808-826-9644, princeville.com), Poipu Bay ($125-$200; 808-742-8711, poipubaygolf.com), Kauai Lagoons ($120-$195; 808-241-6000, kauailagoonsgolf.com) and Wailua ($32-$44; 808-246-2793), an inexpensive but crowded muni.

Hello Joe,
My husband and I are planning to visit family near Cumberland in western Maryland. I'd like a recommendation for a resort that offers both a spa and good golf.
Natalie Thomas, Alexandria, Va.

Ten miles from Cumberland in Flintstone is Rocky Gap Lodge & Golf Resort (301-784-8400, rockygapresort.com). Rooms from $129. Jack Nicklaus did the golf ($25-$80) and spa treats start at $45.

NEW THIS MONTH

The Raven Golf Club at Lora Bay Thornbury, Ontario, Canada

Even if he emerged on the wrong end of a thrashing at the Donnybrook in Dublin, last summer wasn't a total loss for Ryder Cup captain Tom Lehman. In August his latest course design, The Raven at Lora Bay in Canada, made its debut.

Located on the shores of its namesake body of water, two hours northwest of Toronto, the Raven is a collaboration with Canadian architect Thomas McBroom. The 7,105-yard, par-72 course is an easily walkable, strategic test that isn't based on pleasing big hitters or carts-only golfers.

Adding to the Old World flavor is the bunkering: multi-lobed, fescue-fringed traps which are a natural fit for the terrain. Your best photo op is at the downhill, 195-yard 15th, with its glorious Lora Bay backdrop. Let's see Woosie top this one.
