By Michael Breed GOLF MAGAZINE Top 100 Teacher February 07 2007 The Problem Your putts are bouncing and skipping off-line. The likely cause is the position of the shaft and, subsequently, your putterhead at impact. These have a direct bearing on what kind of roll you put on the ball. A well-hit putt will leave your putterface with topspin, which is desirable because it produces the pure forward roll that keeps your ball tracking toward the hole. If you tilt the shaft away from the target at address and allow it to stay that way through impact, however, you actually add to the loft that is built into your putter. This puts backspin on your ball and causes it to skid, bounce off-line and usually finish short of the hole.

Adding loft at impact creates unwanted backspin and putts that skid and bounce off-line.The Fix Address your ball and press your hands forward slightly so that the shaft of your putter tilts ahead of the ball and toward the target. This sets up the putterface to contact the ball at or slightly above the equator with the correct amount of loft, rolling it with topspin toward the hole.

To get a better visual idea of the type of spin you're putting on your putts, draw a line around the circumference of your ball and start your putts with the line horizontal to the ground. If you're putting backspin on the ball, the line will rotate backward--that is, away from your target¡ªjust after impact.A forward-leaning shaft creates topspin, sending the ball forward on a pure and tight roll.
